Rethinking Wellness in High-Pressure Jobs
A while ago, I shared my thoughts on whether wellness has a place in the fast-paced world of hospitality. The answer? Absolutely. But it’s clear—stress is real, and in industries like hospitality, healthcare, retail, and others, frontline staff rarely have the time to step away for a full-hour yoga class.
But what if we stopped thinking about wellness as a separate activity and instead integrated it into the natural rhythm of the workday?
💡 Imagine this: A 15-minute breathwork session to reset and refocus before a shift, or a 30-minute yoga session designed to boost energy and ease tension—without needing to change clothes or roll out a mat. Could these bite-sized wellness breaks be the answer?
The reality is, high-pressure jobs often push wellbeing to the bottom of the list—until burnout and mental health issues become too much to ignore. Mental health statistics for these sectors are worrying: depression, anxiety, and even suicide rates are higher than average in industries like hospitality, healthcare, and retail. In fact, a study found that hospitality workers are almost twice as likely to suffer from mental health challenges as those in other industries. These workers often feel like there’s no time to take care of themselves—but could small, consistent wellness habits be a way to shift this before stress levels peak?
I believe the time for a cultural shift is now. We need to start treating wellness as part of the daily flow, not an afterthought. So, what if we gave our teams the tools to feel better before burnout sets in?
